I can remember picking up some UNESCO Christmas Cards right after Kennedy was elected. By the 70s, I had the "Bircher" attitude you express in your post. I have had no use for them since.

But kicking them out won't work now, IMO. First off, the American Public believes they are a force for good in the world. Secondly, a lot of little countries around the world think so too, and can be persuaded to do things if you invoke their name. So why fight City Hall? A tough administration, such as we have now, has a lot of leverage to reform the UN if they want to push it.
