No, she could have a "real cross" at her desk if she wanted. Several other employees do. What struck me about it was the simple, childlike spontaneity of it: this is where her mind turns in her few idle moments, when no one is looking. She put it where no else could really see it unless they looked twice, like I did. Not out of shame or fear, really, but out of simple unostentation. It was very personal, not a display of any kind. That's what made such an impression on me.
