Democrats estimated on Monday that the various new tax measures Bush is proposing in his budget would cost the U.S. Treasury $1.7 trillion over the next decade and generate deficits of more than $2 trillion over that period. (While the White House claims the deficits are "moderate")

"The Bush budget burdens us, and our children, with trillions of dollars of new debt," said North Dakota Sen. Kent Conrad, the top Democrat on the Senate Budget Committee.

"His plan will push up interest rates, retard economic growth, and create massive problems for the soon-to-be retiring baby boom generation," he said.
