The problem with examining the wing during an EVA is that they run the risk of damaging the tiles.

Tile repair during orbit was studied extensively. It was determined that the difficulty of space walks under the vehicle posed a greater risk of damaging tile than the benefit which could be achieved.

Nevertheless, it is probably worth revisiting.

Columbia was never docked at the station. It wasn't capable as it was never fitted to dock at the station.

Are you Geraldo Rivera? He was babbling the same tripe on TV the other day...

1) Columbia wasn't equipped with a robotic arm, it had a double Spacehab module in the payload bay. Therefore the only way they could have seen the underside of the shuttle would have been for the crew to travel there hand over hand, since they didn't have EMUs either. The chances of someone losing their grip and drifting off into space was much more real than the chance of them having structural damage from the foam.

2) They didn't dock with ISS... this was solely a science mission, and the Columbia has never been fitted with a docking port (because it was the heaviest shuttle). Do you think that if they had been at ISS that they wouldn't have inspected the ship? They do a camera inspection from the ISS on each shuttle as it comes in... but since they didn't go to ISS, no such luck.
