Steve, any student of constitutional law knows that the US Supreme Court has always deferred to the State on issues relating to the State's election laws. It is up to the State's courts to interpret and apply the state's own election laws. The Florida State Supreme Court did this. The US Supreme Court, without any historical precedent, over-ruled the Florida Court. The give away is they warned that their decision was not to be used as a precedent in other equal protection cases. Now, why would they do that if they were not embarrassed by their own ruling?

I disagree with La Griffe du Lion on many things, this included, but he does make a case for some of your complaints.
