We probably have the power to deter NK

When you speak of detering NK, you're really talking about detering one individual, as the rest of NK has no awareness of events outside NK.

That's a lot of power in one man's hands. Deterrence/containment would have to be viewed solely as a short-term goal from my perspective.

I get your point. We probably have the power to deter NK, but I'd rather not depend on deterence if we don't have to. North Korea isn't the most sane or stable place. If they where pressed and under extreme pressure anything might happen. The odds are very low, but I don't want to risk it if we don't have to.

I think the odds are lower than even you think. Long jim wants something and that's why he's behaving the way he is.....one minute challenging the US, the next acting conciliatory. I suspect someone Korean can better read what he's doing. I don't think he's ready to go to war for all his chest thumping and threats.

You ask why they would take that risk, I ask why would we take the risk that they might? Or that they might blackmail and intimidate with nukes without actually using them.

I suspect the risk is nil.......Long Jim isn't of a different species than us. He's not anxious to lose his life......on the contrary, he strongly wants to hold onto it with all its trappings.
