Look at this...begging Ted to stay in Atlanta. From the Atlanta urinal...OUR VIEW An open letter to Ted Turner Dear Ted: Don't go! What's in Florida for you? Our Southern neighbor may offer you a substantial income tax break, but you surely don't crave more riches. You end up giving away much of your fortune to good causes anyway. So you're a little bored and restless, thinking about spending more time on yacht racing? OK, Florida does have the advantage of lots of oceanfront property. But Savannah's not far from here, especially by corporate jet. It's easy to understand why you're frustrated. After years of seeing your influence ebb at AOL Time Warner, you're walking away and leaving your position as vice chairman of the board. It's just as well. They didn't seem to take your advice that seriously. But Ted, you're still active, vigorous, creative and a little crazy -- in other words, the quintessential entrepreneur. You're too young to retire to some yacht club to while away your days repeating stories about old victories. You need a challenge! And the institutions that you built in Atlanta -- institutions that helped this city come of age as a vibrant international metropolis -- desperately need your leadership. You would do your hometown a favor if you bought back Turner Broadcasting System, which includes CNN and the Atlanta Braves. The AOL Time Warner merger has been disastrous all around, not least for the crown jewel you created, CNN. After three years of constant upheaval, the network is a confusing stew of competing editorial strategies -- some reflecting hard-news gathering, some reflecting infotainment, some that defy any label whatsoever. Despite the emphasis on CNN's fall to second place (behind Fox) in the ratings war, the network remains profitable. You could save it before the AOL albatross puts too much pressure on CNN for still more cuts, which could end its claim to journalistic excellence. Then there are the beloved Braves, America's Team. AOL doesn't give a rip about the Braves because it doesn't reflect their core mission. Rumor has it they'd sell in a heartbeat. Ditto the Hawks and the Thrashers. Don't let 'em ruin your legacy, Ted. Buy back Turner Broadcasting and reclaim Turner Field before you become ashamed that they bear your name.
