With hundreds of launches to date, the American and Russian manned space programs have suffered just three fatal losses in flight—and two were space-shuttle calamities. This simply must be the end of the program.

Well, just goes to show you that when you let political reporters talk facts are unimportant. First, there have been at least 4 accidents resulting in death in a flying space vehicle. Second, of course the shuttle was going to have more since it has probably flown more missions at this point than all of the Russian manned missions put together. Certainly it makes up the bulk of the manned US missions.
