On the rare occaision when I discuss North Korea while in China, the usual response is a shake of the head and s sigh -- I do not think China knows what to do about North Korea. China has a large problem with North Koreans as refugees. Japan is the most likely target for North Korea and there is no influence in North Korea. South Korea has limited influence -- after all, that border is the world's true hair trigger flashpoint -- 24/7/365. Russia has some influence -- North Korea patterns themselves in some respects after the old Stalinist system. North Korea is by all accounts a complete disaster -- with a rapidly growing arsenal of WMD that could go over a cliff, taking many hundreds of thousands or millions of people with them.

One thing is for sure, a fight in North Korea would be a real war. In Iraq, it seems that we have lulled ourselves into thinking that we are invading Grenada, and given Iraq's apparently limited military capability we can only hope that it is more of a turkey shoot than a real war.
