NEW YORK (Dow Jones)--U.S. stocks have dropped further Tuesday, with the Nasdaq Composite Index dipping below the psychologically important 1300 level intraday for the first time since Oct. 29.

The Nasdaq last closed below 1300 when it finished at 1298.71 on Oct. 24.

The Dow Jones Industrial Average is down 167.50, or 2.07%, to 7942.32. All but one of its 30 components is falling, as SBC Communications manages to rise 28 cents to 25.56.

The Nasdaq Composite has slid 29.35, or 2.22%, to 1294.44 while the broad Standard & Poor's 500-stock index has lost 19.38, or 2.25%, to 840.94.

The Russell 2000 Index of small-cap stocks is off 5.07, or 1.37%, to 365.18 while the Standard & Poor's SmallCap 600 Index has shed 1.76, or 0.93%, to 186.70.

Volume on the New York Stock Exchange is 493 million shares, with down volume ahead of up, 426 million to 65 million. Decliners outpace advancers, 2,117 to 898.

Volume on the Nasdaq is 444 million shares, with down volume ahead of up, 390 million to 49 million. Decliners outpace advancers, 2,035 to 716.

I don't remember a time when I've seen the trin over 3 for so long...

maybe it did after 9/11?
