February 3, 2003 --
WASHINGTON - The Bush administration will propose an increase in NASA's budget, a boost likely to be approved by lawmakers who eagerly came forward to support the space agency in the wake of Saturday's Columbia disaster.

Critics say NASA is a waste of money, but most lawmakers applauded the president's budgetary commitment to the space program.

Sen. John Breaux - a key moderate - even said the president should divert part of his tax cut toward new space research and development.

"We're looking at a $670 billion tax cut," Breaux (D-La.) told CNN. "I mean, you know, that's money that could be used, or at least a portion of it, to rebuild NASA."

Sen. George Allen (R-Va.), also backed a budget hike.

"We can't just sit here and do nothing," Allen said. "We need to keep advancing, keep improving and keep innovating."

The Bush budget proposal, which will be released today, calls for a $470 million increase in NASA's $15 billion budget, or roughly 3 percent.

An administration official called the increase "large," but it is within the president's vow to limit increases in spending to 4 percent.

It is likely to pass, said upstate Republican Rep. Sherwood Boehlert.

"Congress is committed to providing that funding," he told ABC.
