It seems that the stock prices include an assessment of the likely price of gold at lower levels than the current cash price. The stocks "might" be discounting this move up in gold. And this "might" be influenced by speculative short positions. That is how I am reading it. In my view, the price of gold is not so easily predicted, and the equity shorts could be in for a surprise.
