why would the distribution be normal? Certainly the current distribution of income is not even close to normal, in the US at least. It is skewed downward (i.e. median < mean) with much fatter tails than a normal distribution. This is not due to the presence of the super-rich, but rather to the existence of a highly-skilled upper class and a persistently unskilled underclass. Human performance, especially at the cluster of skills that are valued in the post-industrial economy, is not normally distributed.
