I find it extremely hard to see Bush being more successful under the current circumstances than Clinton in '00.

My own view is that we are in an almost completely different world now than when Clinton took his shot. Whomever one blames, perhaps that should be plural, it is radically different.

Best I can tell there are two paths out of here: one in which the violence continues to the point of some mutual exhaustion, with extremists from both sides continuing to become stronger (what I'm calling the Algerian scenario for want of a better term) or the Bush folk get involved, deeply involved.
