So how is one to consider these displays of magical powers such as you have alluded to as being divided between the white and the dark, the good and the bad?

The normal distinction that is made is based on the intent.
If the motivation is love and the intent is benefitting so-called others, the title is "white magic". If the motivation is fear, greed or similar and the intent is benefitting oneself or some limited group with which one has an affinity, the usual description is "black magic"

The Egyptian magicians were working on behalf of the earthly representative of God--the Pharaoh--yet they are often considered to be bad. Why is that? Also, it appears that their power was not much less than that of Moses acting through God.

I find it hard to comment on biblical "stories" which over time are told, retold, modified etc to the point that the current story may have little resemblance to the original
IF the original even existed!

This does not support an hypothesis that there is something intrinsic which significantly impacts the magical abilities of those judged to be "bad".

"powers" of this kind (which are a phenomenon of the 5th stage of life) are what they are, and are not necessarily
less in the hands of a black magic practitioner. They may last a shorter time, however.

If things work out I might develop magical powers some day. I would hope to avoid any intention or act which would (through an unknown mechanism) dilute these abilities. However, how does one take prophylactic measures against such an eventuality? The Egyptian magicians believed they were honouring God to the very best of their abilities, yet the desert magic has obviously been lost.

The saying "absolute power corrupts" explains quite a bit.
True Spiritual Teachers NEVER recommend the preoccupation with the subject because of its potential to distract from the much higher goal of the Realization of God.

Adi Da is completely traditional in this respect.

Namaste!
