BUY RUBBLES - Russian GDP rose 4.2% in 2002 - Economics Ministry

Interfax. Tuesday, Feb. 4, 2003, 8:39 PM Moscow Time

MOSCOW. Feb 4 (Interfax) - The Russian GDP grew 4.2% last year, Deputy Economics Minister Arkady Dvorkovich told the press on Tuesday.

He said the figure comes from a review of Russia's social and economic performance in 2002 that his ministry plans to publish on Wednesday.

The actual economic growth did not reach the level initially predicted by the ministry.

During 2002 the ministry estimated GDP growth between 3.1% and 4.3% depending on a number of conditions, including world oil prices. During the year the forecast was gradually updated. In December Economics Minister German Gref made the last estimate at 4-4.1%.

The GDP grew 5% in 2001 and 9% in 2000, according to the State Committee for Statistics.

On Wednesday the Economics Ministry board will discuss the 2002 economic and social development review, which also contains figures on industrial production growth, the balance of payments, and other indicators. The figures will be published after the meeting.
