When the shuttle lands, engineers suit up in hazmat suits and walk around the shuttle with sensors looking for toxic residue - primarily concerned with the hydrazine. They place an Umbilical cord on the shuttle to provide fresh air to the astronauts (who must stay inside) while the exterior of the shuttle is cleared.
