I believe that the appropriate analogy would be that of a criminal on probation.

Iraq has not only failed to show compliance, under whatever standard you choose to apply, but there
is substantial credible evidence of
non-compliance

m...

this point seems to get lost on so many...

and yet it is the foundation of the latest UN resolution whereby iraq was given "one last chance" to prove they were in compliance.

the onus of proving the destruction has always been on iraq...the reason for the existence of the un inspectors in the first place was to VERIFY the compliance of iraq in destroying the WMD's.

but we allowed the iraqi's to perpetuate this fraud for years and years, i am assuming the reason was that the perception was "containment" was working.

but once it became clear that POST 9/11, the potential for mass casualties was far too great a risk to take knowing that the previously documented chemical weapon arsenals are now unaccounted for.

we allowed the UN to issue yet one more ultimatum to hussein to provide the proof that iraq no longer in non-compliance.

"where's the evidence"? is most appropriately asked of hussein as he state he has no weapons of mass destruction.

you no longer have these weapons? prove it.

if you cannot or will not prove it you leave no choice but to believe that they still exist.

and as a nation under siege by terrorists, we hold the belief and the right that we will take all possible means to prevent another attack ...

it seems like there are people out there content and willing to wait for a "smoking gun" piece of evidence, and there are those of us who realize that potentially thousands of lives could be lost as we wait for "the proof".

like you said...they want irrefutable evidence, and quite obviously saddam is not nearly so stupid as to provide that.

it is just too bad and very sad for the people of iraq that he is unwilling to conform to the latest un resolution .
