> I don't buy the argument that the U.S. will hold sway in a post war Iraq. The U.N. is likely to have a huge say as well.

Not a chance. Just wait and watch!

> Do you really think he will be allowed to murder these groups?

Absolutely, positively, yes! He won't do that right away. He will play the charming modern Arab leader face to appease the international community. Then in cooperation with the State Dep he will give nasty names to "terrorist groups" with ties to Iran, Al Qaida, Hamas, PKK, etc and use that as an excuse to oppress the people.

> Lots of countries have minorities that are not contented but reach peaceful solutions.

You are missing the point. The Kurds and the Shia are not a minority. Together they constitute a majority of the Iraqies. This is precisely why so much brute force has had to be used; a minority can be contained rather easily and these are not minorities.

> And Turkey has a discontented Kurd population that isn't subdued by brute force.

You must be kidding! According to Turkey, the government has lost 50,000 people to the Kurds. This is on par with what US lost in Viet Nam. Do you really think that these losses were taken because Turkish troops went to the mountain for berry picking?! If only Kurds could use the media the way the Turks do you would have been calling for invasion of Turkey instead of Iraq.

> I think that a little backbone on the part of the world will go a long way to reducing the number of these brutal regimes.

I think lack of military and financial support for them will go even further. Why am I not seeing any discussions about responsibilty of those who sold arms to Iraq or undermined his opposition? House cleaning, like charity, should start at home.
