<<...I am most concerned with inspiring a whole new generation of terrorists by our preemptive invasion on a sovereign ME nation...>>

I am too...The NeoCONS totally fail to address this in an acceptable way....Folks like Hackworth, Ellsberg and Mersheimer all feel its insane to invade Iraq right now and at the end of the day we WOULD NOT be any safer...'Vigilant Containment' of Saddam can and would work...IMO, the strong case for war still has not been made...Most folks I have talked with around the country still are not convinced...Last time The U.S. went into a war without strong support from Congress AND the citizens of this country was VietNam -- we know the unfortunate outcome...History repeats itself.

res- I am most concerned with inspiring a whole new generation of terrorists by our preemptive invasion on a sovereign ME nation

When we end the places of tyranny which inspire and give support to terrorists, their network will be less effective, less able to grow, and less able to recruit a new generation of fanatics. When they are dead, it's even more difficult. The Taliban we killed who supported Osama Bin Laden, won't be threatening America again.

On the other hand, doing the same rehashing containment we've done for 12 years, will guarantee the growth of another generation of terrorists, who will then have an embolden Saddam to give them even more support.

Secretary Powell laid out clearly the link between Iraq and Al Queada. I don't believe he was lying. I believe he is a man of immense integrity and sound judgement. To not believe the link between terrorists and Iraq exists, you have to believe Colin Powell was either duped, a liar, or you simply missed the presentation and are uninformed.

inspiring a whole new generation of terrorists

We don't have to inspire them, SC, there will always be plenty of Fundamentalists around who are willing to take on the great Satan. The difference from now on is that we will continue to find, fix, and kill them when they try.

We spent twenty years, from 1980 to 2000, trying not to annoy the terrorists. They attacked us anyway. And when they realized that we were not coming after them in any serious way, they became convinced that we were afraid of them, and that that they could attack us with impunity. This is one of the major reasons for 911, and was Bin Ladin's biggest miscalculation.

If we adopted the fearful approach you are advocating, we would get more attacks, not less. Right now we have the bastards "Watching the skys."

He is not insane and will not risk upsetting his happy little reign by doing something suicidal like attacking with a WMD.

Apparently you don't understand do you Shiloh??

The Soviets never used a nuclear weapon either. But look at how many people died as the US and Russia were locked in a cold war fought on the territories of dozens of peripherals states.

The Soviets didn't have to use them.. Nuclear weapons acted as a shield, behind which they could launch any number of proxy wars through client states with relative impunity.
A nuclear shield GUARANTEED that the US would only go so far in opposing them.

That's the part of history I wish more people would pay attention to. Saddam KNOWS that there is a terrific untapped resource of Arab youth who lie ready to be led.. If only he can erect that nuclear shield that will guarantee his regime to the same measure that Kim Jong Il is trying to guarantee his own.

Once he has them, he will NEVER negotiate them away. They will be the springboard for him, and eventually his son, to intimidate and subvert every one of his neighboring states.

And continuing the "containment" and sanctions on Iraq won't? "Millions of Iraqi babies dead because of sanctions" is big propaganda for the terrorist ops of the world, and they've made much hay of it.
