Ted, <Powell did not come through because they don't have a smoking gun.>

First of all, a gun isn't smoking until it is fired.

That's right.......and that's why it has to be smoking if its to be of any import

Saddam already used his weapons before, which amounts to "smoking guns" themselves. Yet some would rather wait for yet another "smoking gun" before acting, because they simply do not have the resolve.

That's past tense and again that's not what a smoking gun is. Warheads sticking out of the back of a truck.....that's a smoking gun in this particular case. Mustard gas canisters sitting around is another example.

Most will agree that Powell did not provided a smoking gun today.

Second, if anything, Powell has conclusively shown why the inspectors right now are not finding anything. Even France sees this point and is now calling for tripling the number of inspectors in Iraq. (As if that alone will disarm Iraq, but that's another argument.)

Probably there is a need for more inspectors. Although I don't know if they know all of Saddam's hiding places.

And third, all Powell did and needed to do was show proof of Iraq's non-compliance. What the U.N. decides from here is up to them, but it seems Bush has made his case pretty clear.

Listen....war is a pretty serious enterprise.....people get killed, billions get spent. Understandably, people want a smoking gun before they will commit to a war. If they can't have one, I am not sure they will agree.
