Dave >his ideas make me cringe

From what you say, I can understand that.

Here, in South Africa, we have forgotten what being on the right means. The ANC govnt, most of which are former Marxists and card-carrying Communists, now proclaim themselves to be devotees of "free enterprise" which in their terms means corruption, cronyism, punitive taxation and reverse racism (affirmative action).

The mainly white opposition, the Democratic Alliance, probably best described as a collection of former liberals or libertarians, and very much in the minority, are regarded by the ANC as fascists, colonialists and racists.

As far as I am concerned, I have noticed my ideas moving towards the left although I have to say, in a SA context, I have never been on the right or the left. The reason I have become more philanthropic and liberal is simply because there is so much poverty and unemployment here and it's quite clear that true capitalism cannot, on its own, offer a solution.
