My bolded points are most important to note as below:

"Apparently the United States told Iraq that it was not officially interested in the issue. Saddam Hussein seems to have taken that to mean he had a free hand in dealing with his grievances, and on August 2, 1990, he invaded Kuwait".

Classic media hyperbole and supposition. At least they used words like apparently and seems, instead of omitting apparently, and substituting "did" for seems to have.

Get about 6 minutes into that. You can advnce time with the slider at the bottom. Pay particular attention starting about 9 minutes. And again about 12 minutes. PAY PARTICULARLY CLOSE ATTENTION A LITTLE BEFORE 13 MINUTES.

The ambassador, April Glaspie, has since denied that she advised Saddam Hussein that the US would not fight.

That's a source on your side, BTW.

But tell me: Does the fact that a friend tells you murder is OK mean it's OK? Don't you still have a personal responsibility not to commit crimes regardless of who tells you it's alright?

Re: The U.S. behavior regarding this conflict is very puzzling.

LOL! Classic bafflegag from the media. The American aim is perfectly obvious. The realpolitic operators in Washington were arming and aiding both sides in an internecine conflict that was designed to weaken both sides and thereby strengthen the U.S. position in the region.

Re: For reasons which are not entirely clear, the U.S. did not engage in either a covert or overt effort to support either the Kurdish rebels in the North nor the opposition in southern Iraq

Whoever wrote this is either a bold faced liar or a complete dolt. The game was the same in the aftermath of the Gulf War. Bush I cynically worked to maintain the delicate balances within Iraq, keeping all elements weak, thereby increasing U.S. control of the region.
