I think you're getting out ahead of the issues here, Paul. What you see happening is important but I don't think it's where the big game is going to get played over the next several weeks. It's with the opinion polls and the leverage they offer to the Bush folk (or don't offer). I don't doubt Powell's presentation today will give them a pop. But the real issue will be whether it sticks and just how deep it goes. Best we can tell, before the Powell speech, they were very volatile and thus read as quite shallow. My own guess is they will remain shallow perhaps even through a favorable UNSC decision. And we won't know about the depth until some inevitable bad news comes rolling back from Iraq. News bad enough to test the depth.

Too many folk still think this will be Grenada heavy. But are wary at the same time.

Eagleberger also took Cheney to task for his very early chest thumping on Iraq, making it seem that the US would act unilaterally. I am leaning in your direction, I think that it was good cop/bad cop all along. No peeps from Cheney or Rumsfield in a few days. It's vacation days for Bad Cops.

I thought that Powell delivered a couple of Adlai Stephenson momemnts - the 'nerve agent' tape and the satellite photo of the chemical weapons storage. What part of here are the WMD don't you get, Saddam.

The French will fold like a cheap suit any day now.

Paul

I see a massive change in sentiment tonight.

TSTT, IMO. I see, from watching Daschle, that the Dems are playing to their base, and assuming a "I told you so" stance to be ready in case things go bad. This may look like just good politics to the Dem Leaders, but I don't think this is going to go down well with the swing voters, long term.

Just on a personal basis, when we are in this type of war, I am disgusted that the Dem Congressional Leadership is taking these kind of positions. I understand the technical political motives, but I sincerely hope they end up paying for it, long term.
