The output is sampled and that is used to adjust the input levels so that the system is not overwhelmed. Such an amplifier has improved fidelity. I think this is a good analogy to the amplification of wealth effects in a free society with fidelity being analgous to fairness, the ability of the reward system to best track the relative inputs of the participants.
