Bill >I think even he would blush at being called a "patriot".

In the circumstances, I suppose he would --- he would certainly be amused.

From Collins dictionary:
"Patriot n. a person who vigorously supports his country and its way of life."

I imagined that, with his background and his intense literary contribution, he was such a person but it's quite clear that, whatever he is, he is not a patriot.

Scratching around on the internet I came upon this poem which, I am sure in the circumstances, he would be happy to see me post.

>>>Marching Band

"Patriotism is the last refuge of a scoundrel"
Oh beat the drum for the coward hiding in the flag factory
So long ago and so easy with the choice already made
Patriotism is a twisted mass of flesh and polyester
Oh beat the drum while the beautiful ones spit on you
So long ago and so hard to see through all of that plastic
Patriotism is marching marching for the scoundrel
Oh beat the drum on some tired legs and an MT stomach
So long ago yet those burn marks still haven't gone away. <<
