3 unveils third-generation mobile pricing

By Ian Lynch [06-02-2003]

Telco announces the whole Kit and Caboodle

Hutchison's 3 operation has unveiled pricing for the UK's first third-generation services, due to be up and running in March.

3 will begin taking pre-orders online from 22 February, and aims to deliver handsets in mid-March.

It is offering three pricing plans: one pay-as-you-go (3ToGo) and two previously detailed contract deals for £59.99 (Kit on 3) and £99.99 per month (Caboodle on 3).

3ToGo offers free email and information services until the end of June, and voice calls at 5p per minute (same network) and from 10p a minute (other networks).

Video calls will cost 50p a minute, and downloads - including FA Premiership goal replays - from 50p a time.

SMS text messages are 10p each, picture messages 25p and video messages 50p. Customers can receive £100 off when buying two handsets, plus a 20 per cent discount on video calls.

Kit On 3, for £59.99 per month, includes 1,000 minutes of voice calls a month, 100 video call minutes a month, 250 text messages, 50 downloads, 60 picture messages and 40 video messages, plus free email and surfing until the end of June.

Caboodle On 3 has double the free minutes of Kit on 3 for all types of calls and messages, and is charged at £99.99 per month.

Handsets will cost between £399 and £449, but the first 20,000 customers will get them half price.

Customers will also be able to pre-order in-store at 3Store outlets in London and Birmingham as well as major high street stores.

"We are offering consumers the kind of services that were in the realm of science fiction just a few years ago," said Colin Tucker, managing director at 3 UK, in a statement.

Ben, Thanks for the Shoesteck article on Camera Phones. I recall the WR Hambrecht CC sometime back with Peter Friedlaid (sp) and professor Clayton Christensen and their thesis that the current cell phone was “good enough”. I continue to be amazed at the lack of vision of the “analyst” community and others that should be in the know.

Highlights of the article

>>>

"Thus, camera phones are becoming pivotal to the hopes of operators for raising ARPU. Operators in Japan and Korea, which are promoting camera phones to the exclusion of all others, are already more than doubling their data ARPU,"

This transition to only colour-camera phones will be facilitated as components drop in price - a transition by no later than 2007 and plausibly as early as 2005. In fact, during 2006, Shosteck foresee's that virtually all (92%) of color phones will include cameras.

"Given a 12 to 18 month leadership in producing camera phones, together with their proliferation of new models, we foresee that the Japanese and Koreans will succeed brilliantly.

They will relentlessly reduce prices to gain market share. The Japanese, Korean and Chinese manufacturers are setting up a fierce new battleground for market leaders Nokia, Motorola, and Siemens," <<<<
