Larry, more data = more choosable pathways. Without data the only choice was burnup 1/2 second after disaster struck.
I am not sure nothing could have been done. Another orbiter could have been there in a week. Possibly the russians could have made a supply launch to grant them more time on station or with enough delta V to take them both to the ISS(remember with lower payload = more fuel capacity)
Someone took the path of least resistance, of least options. and we wll paid, the 7 most of all.
