The muslim world will hate us no matter what we do -- until such a time as we show great generosity to them with magnificent gesture. Seizing Iraq could actually be useful for that. We could carve off a section of Iraq and with Jordan's help make it a Palestinian homeland of some kind. Give them free huts and jobs if they move there, disarm them and force them to be good. This is all tricky, and we'll need lots of help from Turks, Jordanians and Saudis, but let's face it, Clinton gave it his all to make peace in Israel. He had a nice deal for Arafat, but it wasn't signed and then the the terrorists started up. It was a tragic thing to see all Clinton's good work go to waste. He wanted it to be his final great accomplishment as president, but that was not to be. Carter also tried and failed. If Clinton cannot make peace without war then Bush sure cannot. Clinton offered the carrot. Bush offers the stick. We'll see which one works. The carrot didn't so why not try the stick? All this said, the cooner we get off oil and out of the region the better. 10-20 years from now we can do it if we have the right leadership. let's hope it's not too late by then. That is, no more 9-11's.
