<< Why didn't the US take over Kuwait's and Saudi Arabia's and Qatar's oil? >>

You are really seeking a miracle when you ask the zonders of the world a question, especially one that requires a thoughtful, intelligent answer.

This zonder will either not respond to your questions, or will respond with some nitwit cliche.

I am sorry if you thought that was slander.

You have no grounds to slander the US before it has done any thing wrong in Iraq.

Saddam does not have any nukes yet but that does not stop Bush from "preemptive" strikes, right?

I look back at history and all I see is countries seeking geopolitical & strategic advantage, riches, resources for a better future for their own citizens. I look at corporations, and they seek profit for their shareholders.

All of this is normal. I have nothing against countries pursuing strategies that build a better & richer future for their citizens. Same for corporations for their shareholders.

I just have a problem with those who cannot acknowledge this very simple fact of life, and have to hide behind childish expressions like "He is evil" and "We will liberate the people of Iraq", etc.

Especially hilarious was jlallen's conviction that American corporations would take over Iraqi oil BUT (brace yourself for this!) the money would go to Iraqi people :-)

Why didn't the US take over Kuwait's and Saudi Arabia's and Qatar's oil?

US already pretty much manages Kuwait's oil. As for Saudi Arabia, really, you think they can very well just go in and steal? After all, the media must have something to work on, I guess.

(By the way, I am quite intrigued as to why nothing has been done against Saudi Arabia after 9/11 although all terrorists AND Bin Ladin were Saudi nationals, the money came from there, etc... I realize US and Saudi are best buddies despite the glaring absence of democracy, human rights, and just about every other value US might seek in another country. Still....)

They are much weaker than Iraq.

Saudi Arabia is weaker than Iraq??? On which grounds can you possibly make such a statement?

You see a lot of Japanese and German cars on American roads. Why do you think we allowed that to happen?

Uh, because "you" were advocating free trade across global markets and the Japanese and the German make GOOD cars that are not all that expensive.

I can't believe you asked this question :-)

What did you think the answer would be? "Americans were so nice they allowed Japanese and Germans to sell cars in their beautiful land"?

Re WWII & thereafter - One nice deed done generations ago by a completely different set of people cannot be a guarantee for today's actions. I am sorry, but Europe's gratitude for post-WWII cannot be a blank check for anything else US feels like doing in the future.

What do you expect from the world, Bruce? "Oh Americans are nice, so let's just watch CNN and eat pop corn and wave American flags while thousands are killed??? Come on...

I am sorry if this is shocking to you, but please try to understand that for the rest of the world, America is just another country (albeit a very powerful one), and Americans are just another group of people. There is no exceptional preferential treatment a la "But they are nice people" or something.
