I can't think of another reason why Japan would strike first?

There are two forms of aggression.. Direct and Indirect.

But both are still aggression. Japan merely hoped that by using a more indirect and longer term form of aggression it could achieve it's goals at less of a military and economic cost. When it was evident that the US was going to oppose it, militarily if necessary, they chose direct aggression in a vain attempt to shock the US to the extent that we sued for peace.

Big mistake... And one that Kim Jong Il seems bent upon repeating...
