the regime will aim to draw the US forces into urban warfare in Baghdad. A civilian death toll of at least 10,000 is likely, three times as many as died in the 11 September attacks;

Very possibly so, I see Saddam arming women and children now . I'm not sure how many of those that were ordered to pose with guns in hand will actually be there in reality later on .<G> Every civilian death will be absolutely avoided whenever possible.

this is a low estimate, the experience of urban warfare in Beirut and elsewhere suggests even higher casualties;

I don't see this having any legitimate correlation to Beruit of yesteryear and the past . The world has changed much since then , it changes surprisingly fast these days you know , even sent a Hindu woman into space . The Iraqi's want this change too .

evidence of Iraqi military tactics in 1991 shows that the survival of the regime is the core policy and that chemical and biological weapons are almost certain to be used, certainly against attacking troops and possibly against targets in neighbouring countries;

Iraqi tactics in '91 , was to lay their weapons down and surrender as fast as they could drop them . At least the smart and living one's did . That war had to be ended in 4 days to not appear as inhumane and a complete rout . Still today the debate goes on if too much force was used . What makes you think now that they will be any less willing to surrender this time around ? Because Saddam is cornered ?

Let him break out his WMD's then , for all to see. His end will be swifter in that case. His military is weak and in shambles . He's done .

severe casualties arising to Iraqi use of chemical and biological weapons could result in a nuclear response - the first use of nuclear weapons since August 1945.

Again , that remains to be seen . But this worst case scenario has yet to unfold , and is first predicated on Saddam showing his hand . He has these weapons? These weapons he is supposed to not have ?

Seems you and these fellows know more than the weapons inspectors then <G>

Even on the "best-case" outcome of regime destruction with minimal loss of life, the effect of replacing Saddam Hussein with a client regime would be deeply counterproductive.

A pro-American regime in Baghdad would be seen across the region as a puppet government through which the US seeks to control Iraq's oil, currently four times the size of total US oil reserves including Alaska.

These "intellectuals" sure are full of alot of certitudes aren't they ?<G> At least their data on the oil reserves is correct .

I have no idea where these fellows allow themselves the hallucination that the US will have full control and benefit of the Iraqi oils . it seems fairly clear that most all legitimate contracts with Iraq made formerly with Russia , France and China will be honored by the new leadership we help put into place , and we are going to maintain a "trust" for the Iraqi people until such time stability is achieved.

This would be a "gift" to al-Qaida and other paramilitary groups who have longed claimed that the United States in the Gulf solely because of the region's oil reserves. Support for such groups would rise, with an increased risk of further paramilitary attacks on the US and other states involved in the war.

The Al_Qaida and company are being hunted now as we speak , in a variety of ways , and that will go on for some time .

enough said , until their next fall.

The report concludes that destroying the Iraqi regime by force is a highly dangerous venture and that alternative policies should be urgently developed.

that report reads like a 3rd grade coloring book, with an insufficient number of crayons.
