The US has committed itself to defending the independence of Kuwait and the other small Persian Gulf nations. Just before Saddam invaded Kuwait, we explicitly stated that we did NOT have such a policy. <<< During a press briefing on July 24, State Department spokesperson Margaret Tutwiler said: "We do not have any defense treaties with Kuwait, and there are no special defense or security commitments to Kuwait.''
