a couple of years ago, one of the qcom geeks <gggg> was explaining synchronous vs asynchronous to me. I did not understand it then (and now) but I got the idea that asyn is just so much more difficult to do vs sync.

This sounds like exactly the problem they are experiencing with the handoffs????

SK Telecom Not to Reduce WCDMA Investment

By Kim Kyu-tae
Friday, February 07, 2003

SK Telecom reconfirmed its earlier position that it would invest a total of 2.5 trillion won in facilities, including 520 billion won for WCDMA, this year. In 'SK Telecom CEO conference call' on Feb. 6, President of the SK Telecom Pyo Moon-soo said that the company was going to invest 520 billion won in 2GHz band WCDMA facilities especially in Seoul in preparation for rapidly increasing data call volumes.

The decision is based on its forecast that frequency volumes in Seoul are expected to be saturated by the end of the year. SK Telecom analyzed that even if it replaces existing IS95a·b network with cdma2000 1x having high network efficiency, it would have difficulty meeting soaring data demand.

President Pyo explained that SK Telecom should inject 520 billion won in WCDMA in order to offer a cdma2000 1x level of call quality to 3 million subscribers in Seoul.

"We've not made any decision on the WCDMA investment for 2004 and after that. Whether or not to make additional investment shall be decided, depending on service conditions," said Mr. Pyo. "We would move in the direction of gradually reducing investment."

But he premised that "all investment is based on profitability." And he added, "For WCDMA investment, as we take into account the level of handset development and supply, the degree of cdma2000 1x EVDO service activation, and competition, investment decision could be changed."

Mr. Pyo said that he would immediately inform investors of any changes in investment.

President Pyo also revealed that investment in cdma2000 1x and EVDO, except WCDMA, would be reduced, but investment in the wireless Internet area would be increased, so that the total investment would reach about two trillion won.

In addition, he forecasted that the gradual adoption of number portability would not have big implications on its market share. He said, "We cannot trust a survey result of Korea Information Society Development Institute (KISDI) that SK Telecom's market share would drop by 2 percent. The policy change would have a limited effect on the market due to the wide penetration of handsets and a small gap in charge between SK Telecom and late starters."

President Pyo estimated that if a total of 2.5 trillion won is invested this year, its surplus cash flow would be as mush as 1.3 trillion won. SK Telecom is going to return 30 percent of the surplus cash flow to its shareholders and set aside 50 percent and 20 percent for debt redemption and internal reserves respectively.

In the mean time, he apologized for a considerably wide gap between expected EBITDA (Earnings before Interest, Taxes, Depreciation, and Amortization) margin and the figures released last month. Recently, SK Telecom announced 47.3 percent of EBITDA margin in a letter sent to investors late last year, even though the margin had been expected to be 50 percent, bringing mass confusion.

==========

The decision is based on its forecast that frequency volumes in Seoul are expected to be saturated by the end of the year... President Pyo explained that SK Telecom should inject 520 billion won in WCDMA in order to offer a cdma2000 1x level of call quality to 3 million subscribers in Seoul.

What do you do if you're running out of capacity in Seoul at existing frequencies... and MIC has you locked in to wCDMA at 2ghz?

1) Use wCDMA for voice?
2) Hope wCDMA can perform at same level as 1x?
2) Pray Q can do wCDMA handovers better than 3GSM vendors?

ROTFLMAO!

>>(3) admits launch glitch<<

Another DoCoMo Edsel?

It's hard to know whether to laugh or cry! They've clearly known about this for some time - hoping to keep it under wraps. Now, how many consumers will be buying handsets that are known to be dysfunctional?

The finger pointing stage begins. When will they announce another launch delay? Next week?

Can even Q untangle a mess like this?
