The EC makes smaller states important too. They might as well remove themselves from the union otherwise as they would never have an impact on the election. Nobody would campaign outside of the big cities. The Senate is what makes the small states important, not the EC. Secondly, this is a big country with 50 states.........visiting small towns is only feasible in a state with only small towns and no cities whether we have the EC or not. The EC was a safety net for those who were not so comfortable with the concept of democracy. Remember back then, democracy was in its infancy. For different reasons, its raison d'etre has been mostly neutralized over time. I'm all for trashing it so we don't have a repeat of the 2000 election. ted
