Should we have told the Japanese they could have China and Hawaii in response to that attack?<<< First of all, Lazarus, you're writing as if nothing was going on prior to Pearl Harbor, leaving an image that suddenly 2,000 Americans were killed against a backdrop of no other deaths in the world. In 1931, Japan invaded Manchuria. In 1937, Japan and Germany teamed up. That same year, Germany invaded Poland. Also, in 1939, Australia, Britain, Canada, France, India, New Zealand and South Africa each declared war on Germany, this while the US proclaimed neutrality. In 1940, Italy teamed with Germany and declared war on Britain and France, with France getting invaded by Italy and Italy also invaded Greece and Egypt (note no US response); while Germany invaded Romania. Importantly, in that year, Germany, Italy and Japan formally and ultimately team into the Axis Powers. Where was the US on this "Axis of Evil" of that time? This terrible year also saw Hungary, Romania and Slovakia join the Axis Powers. In 1941, Bulgaria and Yugoslavia join the bad guys, and North Africa gets invaded by Germany and it also takes over Iraq. Croatia also declared war on Britain. Germany, despite the non-agreession pact, invades the Soviet Union, and Italy, Romania, Hungary and Finland each declare war on the Soviets. Meanwhile, Japan takes over IndoChina. Finally, this same year Britain and the US finally teamed up. December 7, 1941 saw Japan declare war on the US while bombing Pearl Harbar the very same day; also invading Siam and Malaysia. Bottom line? There already were hundreds of thousands of deaths before American's 2000 perished at Pearl Harbor. Comparing Pearl Harbor with the Twin Towers/Pentagon only works in terms of the vast numbers of people who should not have died. Also very noteworthy, is after Japan killed two thousand of our citizens, we didn't declare a war on some other country--we declared war on Japan. I suppose the most important point to demonstrate here is that Iraq did not kill 3,000 of our citizens!worldwartwotimeline.com
