When Saddam agreed to the UN resolution 1441, HE agreed with the numbers.....That is certainly my understanding.

But Iraq has not built an air force in the aftermath of the first Gulf War.
Oh, come now. You can do better than this. I know you can.

An equivalent to the argument you pose is that this war must be because the infidel has taken holy Jerusalem because the Crusades were about that.

Uh, times do change. And causes. This has to do with Iraq refusing to comply with the terms of the peace agreement that ended the Gulf War. THAT'S why the Treaty of Versailles is apt, not because of building air forces. You could just as well have argued that we should go to war because Saddam has more than 100,000 men in his army, you know.

Why must Bush only believe the figure that leaves 6,000 remaining
Why does he have to BELIEVE anything? We are not required to do a leap of faith.

Do you really think 500,000 people should die over bad recordkeeping?
What makes you think 500,000 people are going to die?

The Gulf War didn't kill that many. And if what you say about how Saddam is such a nice guy and doesn't have anything nasty, this should be even shorter and cleaner.

And how DO you know it's just "bad recordkeeping"? Eh?

My personal opinion, based only on conjecture on my part, is that Saddam does have some chemical weapons but that they are weapons he deems necessary for defensive purposes.
He is not allowed to have them. Period. For any purposes.

For that matter, what if the US were to invade?
I think that has been made clear enough. 500 kilotons by return mail.

I suspect he'll want to keep them no matter what.
Then he will get his a$$ kicked. No matter what.

I think he thinks once he has his ducks in order that it's possible he'd use some of that power for leverage against Israel on behalf of the Palestinians for whom he has an affinity.
Hitler just wanted to help out the Sudeten Germans, too.
Gimme a break. Saddam cares about the Palestinians, other than as pieces in a propaganda play? How naive can you get?

But when you think about this, people all over the world have an affinity for the Palestinians.
How about: Muslims all over the world have an affinity for the Palestinians. But not even all of them. A lot don't care.

After all, the US has a history of dominance and aggrsssion when it comes to seeking the world's resources.
Right. That's why we kept Europe, Japan, and north Africa as conquered provinces after WW2.

You do remember that Hitler voluntarily gave back not one square inch of the territory he had taken, right?

Then if he needs weapons of mass destruction for defensive purposes, why in the hell doesn't he say that in front of the UN ?

PT, you seem to think the UN is the end-all-be-all that can fix this, but they are not.

Iraq has to show they are under some sort of threat, and, gee, maybe the UN would reconsider (?)

Do I want a war ? Hell no, but there is a nut over there that is going to do something to someone somewhere, and you can bet your ass he will say the US forced him to, maybe that will spur every country to throw out our embassies and corporate interests.....
And you can bet if we back down now, he will for-sure not back down, he will just get stronger, and then we will have to go bail out our allies (again), but this time he will have had more time to build even more stuff.
