That certainly cuts both ways, teevee.

"America wants to invade Iraq for the oil"

Compared to:

"France doesn't want the US to invade Iraq to save its existing oil contracts."

The difference, of course, is that there is a demonstrable existing interest which supports the assertion in the French case.

Hitchens is shameful, cowardly, small minded and "small p" provincial. Berkeley should be ashamed to have him as a visiting fellow.

And other than that, you think he's OK, it take it? He really hit a nerve with you teevee. Got some Frenchmen in the family tree?

That's funny - I think Hitchens is the closest thing we have these days to George Orwell - someone who doesn't believe in bullshit no matter whether it's being spouted by friend or foe. Most people have a tendency to be blind to bullshit when it's coming from someone they like, or agree with.

You, for example, would like to believe that the French oppose war in Iraq because they are noble and high minded. Yet, this is inconsistent with their acts in the Ivory Coast, Rwanda, Vietnam, and Algeria, to name just a few. Ask the Ivorians and the Tutsis what they think of the French. You'll need a necromancer or seancer to ask the Tutsis.

Here's what Ivorians think of the French:

(Not that Hitchens is perfect - I disagree with him about Mother Teresa; although some of his criticisms have a factual basis, I think he misinterpreted her intentions. She was too naive and otherworldly to have the intentions he attributed to her, in my opinion. Not that she was perfect, either.)
