I hope you'll expand on this a bit.

If the local oppression is the problem, what can the U.S. do? Sounds like this is out of our hands other than trying to influence Arab governments.

If it's the perceived lack of fair play by the West that's the problem, what can we do?

My own opinion is that the two root causes are 1) Poverty and lack of economic opportunity 2) The United States blind support of Israel and that country's refusal to accept an independent Palestine.
