Mexico did first declare war on the US.

And it also opened fire first.

marcos and I went into this in gruesome detail about a month ago.

Go study some history.

Obviously, we should have ended slavery peacefully, as the rest of the world did.
And precisely how was that to happen AND keep the Union together? Remember, the Southern states started seceding after Lincoln's election. They weren't taking orders from Washington anymore.

So, do you think that the Confederate States, having seceded to maintain slavery, were then going to abolish it?

BTW, I am at least fairly well versed in Civil War history and Mr. Lincoln's views. Go check the Civil War thread. There was also a long discussion with ShilohCat on GWB that preceded that.

Tom: The Civil War was indeed about slavery. M2
