Secret U.S. Plan for Cyber-War to Feature Windows XP (2003-02-07) -- President Bush signed a secret directive ordering the development of a plan for how the United States would launch cyber-attacks against enemy computer networks, according to administration officials. At the heart of the program, called Operation Fatal Error, is a scheme to smuggle copies of Microsoft Windows XP into nations like Iraq, North Korea and Iran. Pentagon planners hope unsuspecting military and industrial IT directors will load the "bootleg" software on thousands of PCs. "Once XP is in place, it's like an open door into any network to which it's connected," said one Pentagon source. "Our secret ops folks will walk right in, sit right down and have their way." Officials at Microsoft headquarters refused to comment, but released a brief statement which said: "We're glad to be able to serve our country's technology needs, and we will fully cooperate as long as XP is bundled with the Internet Explorer browser."
