Hi X,

In regard to Powell having Picasso's powerful painting "Guernica" covered up in the UN, I recently finished reading an interesting article in February 3,2003 issue of the "The New Yorker". It is an article titled, Sophie's "Guernica" on page 46, that tells of Sophie Matisse, great-granddaughter of Henri Matisse that is coming into her own as a 37 year old painter.

She is doing some unique work where she paints a classic like the "Mona Lisa" without Mona Lisa. Interesting concept. Also done her great-grandfather's "Goldfish" without the goldfish in the bowl and Picasso's "Woman in the Mirror" without the woman..

Anyway it also goes on to talk some about the rivalry between Matisse and Picasso and how vestiges of it carried down through her family. There is a quote from Gertrude Stein in it where she once said that they "became friends but that they were also enemies".. LOL..

An interesting read if a person likes art, especially reading about guys like P and M like I do..
