I used to agree with this post completely but I am one of the people swayed by the Powell presentation to the UN.

My feeling is that although there may be no direct links between Al-Quida and Iraq, the issue is the quantity of chemical and biological weapons that can only be created when a corrupt government is behind their creation. It takes a government to produce tons of anthrax for example. Iraq seems to be doing this. One man (OBL) and his organization no matter how well organized and funded is no match for a government infrastructure that wants to produce this stuff. Plus you've got all the highly trained iraqi scientists at your disposal, the human capital that Al-Quida would have more difficulty obtaining than even the components to the weapons. Afaik Iraq is the only government going about producing WMDs in bulk with a rogue leader. I haven't heard about anything out of Malaysia, Africa etc. So on that basis I support removing Saddam Hussein.

My issue with this is Bush's handling of the situation, which could result in turning the UN going forward into something of a Lame Duck. The world has been skeptical that the UN was a US puppet for a while, and this kindof seals it. I think its obvious Bush looks to the world like an immature kid with guns, this is extremely damanging, and finally the economy is taking another dive over this isolationism at a time when we really needed a tailwind to get going not the drag of war with US as the aggressor.

Fortunately I think the masses are waking up to the damage Bush has done to the US's negotiation position and there is a real chance he will be defeated in 04. Maybe then the stock market can rally and people can get back to work.
