Maybe you don't get it. In China to go to university there is incredible competition. Not skin color. Not sex. Real brain power. From 6 am to 9 at night they study to have the chance to get in.

Same in Japan and Russia but there is more to capitalism that just brains and numbers (of people). You need a whole infrastructure to support fledgling companies/ideas, you need a culture that supports free thinkers/mavericks, you need a nonexistant caste system. Maybe China has these things , its too early to tell. But Japan looked like they would eclipse us a decade ago too, until they had to come up with some ideas of their own and they failed miserably.

and the weight of the bureaucracy that you seem to cherish.

I am not in favor of any beaurocracy (I think this was in regards to environmentalism?)... the one very major exception wrt environmentalism and bearocracy that I do support are the fuel emmissions and fuel efficiency laws, only because I want to remove US reliance on foreign oil, there has to be a way to invent ourselves out of this oil dependency, it costs too much to placate these oil rich countries and I'm sick of it. If oil prices collapsed for good (due to the invention of some sort of oil replacement) I'm fairly convinced that entire region would fade away into oblivion or end up working for israel.
