Jacob,

The Catholic Church would have had to restructure their entire power structure to adopt to the Protestant revolution. Too many people had too much power and were making too much money to risk giving up their gig. They would have killed the Pope before allowing reforms. You misunderestimate institutional inertia and the forces allied against change.
