If the roles were reversed, and Russia or China were trying to gain support to invade/attack, let's say Chechnya or Taiwan ,and they were made to make their case before the council, and were blocked by say the US , Britain and France, would it be deemed a victory for the UN, by those who now oppose it? So just because the US and Britain are on the receiving end of disagreement right now is no reason to tout its " irrelevance " and lash out at it as merely a " debating Society ". The US AND the UN can exist together on this planet.IMO. It doesn't have to be one or the other, and any President who's legacy it will be to have disbanded the UN, or NATO for that matter, will go down in Historical Infamy. The UN is actually being strengthened by this exercise though, and showing its usefulness as a counterweight towards any one nation member's utility towards acting in what may be perceived by some as " unilateral interests ". I believe this current administration is mostly genuine towards it goals of disarming IRAQ,and believe we will ALL be better of when and if that happens.Next week..next month doesn't matter.Saddam ain't goin nowhere and no way is he able to cause any major damage to the region as long as this process continues. Hats off to this administration for maintaining this resolve if those ends are accomplished going forward. The ways and means may not be what many would have preferred, but the end does justify the means in some cases. Bush has an exit opportunity by citing this resolve as the catalyst that brought compliance towards the UN sanctioned disarmament process.I believe he should use that opportunity in a humble manner to conclude this process once it has been determined to have been successful. Anything other than that will not be considered in a approving way by those outside his sphere of direct influence, and likely induce long term instability throughout the world. If Bush wants instability, which I doubt very much , he has only to dismiss the UN as an irrelevant debating society and go it somewhat alone. Countries may form into a coalition of the willing, until the NEXT target is acquired ,and they become intransigent towards another campaign and another campaign and another campaign and… Mr. Powell called today’s session “ a good debate “. I agree. DEBATE IS GOOD!! Every area of trouble gives out a ray of hope; and the one unchangeable certanity is that nothing is certain or unchangeable. --John Fitzgerald Kennedy
