Jacob,

We are clearly seeing a structural shift in international relations. The current structure was put in place during the Cold War and it made sense for the Cold War. It is a different world now and there will be a new structure emerge. This is as it should be but the process looks ugly. As Mark Twain said, "I am all for progress, it is change I don't like".

As for your donought, France withdrew militarily from Nato 35 years ago. As the people of Kosovo about the effectiveness of NATO.

As for Turkey being denied protection, I say offer them membership in NAFTA. Turn Turkey into the economic star of the Islamic world. Provide people with a viable alternative to the status quo. Eurpoe doesn't want to touch Turkey and the US should embrace them completely.
