You probably would like a delicacy of the Alaska native women -- stink eggs. They are salmon eggs buried in the ground in a bed of moss for two weeks.

I read an article a couple of years ago that some of the women got sick because they tried making the stink eggs in a Tupperware container that they buried. That produced anaerobic respiration and created deadly toxins. Apparently the oxygen afforded by the moss bed is critical.
