This from a guy who doesn't understand transubstantiation?

I have never understood how George Bush can be a man, the satan and the son of the devil all at the same time.

Fundamentalist Muslims sincerely believe that freedom of religion, freedom from religion, freedom of the press, equal rights for women, rule of law (not Sharia law) etc., are contrary to the will of Allah and thus cannot be tolerated in a just society.

Learning how to accommodate these differences is something we should aspire to. Pretending that they don't exist, or that they don't matter, is not.

There is nothing that we can "give" the Muslim "street" to make these differences go away.

There is a big gap between belief and practise. The powerful in a society learn how to use that gap. Look at the 'fundamentalist jews', there has been an accomondation worked out between society and the hard core religion.

Over time, the goal is not to change or adopt to Islam, it is to take the life and death drama from the belief. If religion becomes the sole source of personal identity, it has much power. I don't doubt that this reducing this passion is possible but I am also not optimistic.
