OT--French military defeats:

And that's not the beginning of the list. A generation before the French Revolution, the French lost to England, in a long war, known as the French And Indian War to the U.S. It was actually a World War, in which France ended up losing not only all their N American colonies, but India as well. Before that, they had made a strong bid to be the dominant colonial power in India. For the French militarily, it's been downhill since the late 1600s.

Also add the failed 1956 attack on Suez. That debacle led directly to France (and England) losing their status as dominant powers in Africa, and therefore (around 1960) having to change their own direct-colonization model for the American colonization-by-proxy model.
